A pool surround gets splashed, walked on wet and hit by reticulation, then baked dry, over and over. Each wet-and-dry cycle carries dissolved salt and calcium into the open stone and leaves it behind as the water dries. That is the pale, cloudy bloom you see creeping across the coping and paving.

Why it goes blotchy and pale by the water.
A pool surround is the hardest place a soft limestone lives. If your tumbled coping and paving are showing pale, cloudy, splash-shaped marks, this is what is actually happening, and why scrubbing does not keep them away.
It is water moving through the stone, not dirt on top
Pool splashout and bore-water reticulation soak into the open tumbled pores. As the surface dries in the sun, the water leaves its dissolved salt and calcium behind on and just under the face. That chalky, pale bloom is efflorescence and hard-water deposit, not surface dirt. Clean it off and it returns with the next wet-and-dry cycle, because the water keeps moving through the stone.
The tumbled finish holds and shows it more
The open, textured face that feels soft underfoot has more pore and relief to trap water, salt and the mineral bloom than a honed or sealed surface would. On the same stone, a tumbled finish will look paler and blotchier than a smooth one, so the marks read strongly right where the splash lands.
Pool chemistry can dull it as well
Salt-chlorinated and acid-dosed pool water is mildly aggressive to a calcareous stone like limestone. Where it lands and sits, it can slowly etch a duller, paler patch. That is a different thing from the salt bloom, and one no sealer stops, because the acid dissolves the stone itself.
So what does sealing change? It keeps the water, salt and oil sitting up on the surface where cleaning reaches them, instead of keying down into the open pore, and it stays colourless and breathable so nothing is trapped under a film. The bloom becomes a routine clean rather than a mark you can no longer lift. What it will not do is stop the water leaving minerals behind at the source, or stop pool acid etching the stone. The honest fix for the water itself is treating the reticulation.

For decades there were only two ways to seal limestone: lay a film on top, or soak a repellent down the pores. Both fail a soft tumbled stone in Perth, and both change how it looks or feels. Straight about the limits
What it will not do.
In a category built on over-promising, the honest limits are the point. Here are the ones that matter on tumbled limestone, said plainly.
It does not stop acid etching
No penetrating sealer stops acid etching on stone. If wine, lemon juice, pool acid or a harsh cleaner is left sitting on limestone, it can still burn a dull mark, because the acid dissolves the stone itself. Sealing slows how fast a spill soaks in and buys you time to rinse it, no more. Anyone who tells you a stone sealer shrugs off acid is overselling you.
It does not stop the water depositing at the source
Under pool splashout and direct reticulation the water still lands and dries and leaves a salt or calcium deposit. What changes is where it ends up: on a sealed surface it sits on top and lifts in cleaning instead of locking into the open pore. Manageable, not gone. The only fix at the source is treating the reticulation water itself.
It does not fill or change the tumbled texture
That is the point, not a shortcoming. This protects the finish, it does not resurface it. It will not fill the pits, smooth the tumbled relief or darken the colour. If you want the stone to look wet or filled, this is the wrong product, and we will tell you so.
It is a long-lasting treatment, not a permanent one
The beading you can see fades before the protection does, and the coating eases back toward untreated over years. It renews with a top-up on clean stone, no strip. It makes cleaning faster and far less frequent; it doesn't remove the need to clean entirely.

Will sealing change the soft, pale look of my tumbled limestone?
No. MineralProtect is colourless and non-pigmenting, and it adds no film. The only thing it changes is the surface energy of the stone, so water and oil stop gripping. Same pale colour, same soft tumbled texture, same feel underfoot. The enhancer-grade sealers many people are offered deliberately darken the stone to a wet look; this is the opposite kind of product, and keeping the finish exactly as it is now is the whole point of it.
Why is my tumbled limestone going blotchy and white around the pool?
It is efflorescence and hard-water deposit. Pool splashout and bore-water reticulation soak into the open tumbled pores, and as the surface dries in the sun the water leaves its dissolved salt and calcium behind as a pale, chalky bloom. Pool chemistry can also dull the calcareous surface on top of that. It is not dirt, and it returns after cleaning because the water keeps cycling through the stone. A breathable seal keeps the deposit sitting on the surface where cleaning lifts it, instead of it locking into the open pore. Treating the reticulation water is the fix at the source, and the honest answer is usually to do both.
Should I seal my tumbled limestone around the pool?
For most pool surrounds, yes. A seal does not stop the water arriving, but it keeps salt, oil and mineral deposit sitting on the surface so it lifts in a routine clean instead of keying into the open pore and dulling the stone between cleans. Because it is colourless and breathable, it protects the soft tumbled finish without darkening it or trapping salt under a film. Will it make a wet pool surround slippery?
We make no slip claim and hold no slip rating, and we won't call anything non-slip or safe around a pool. What can make coated stone slippery is a film that lays over the top and smooths the texture your feet grip. MineralProtect is not that: it's colourless, adds no film, and leaves the tumbled profile, texture and feel of your stone unchanged. If a slip classification is part of a strata specification, the correct way to settle it is an accredited AS 4586 test on a sample of your actual coping, before and after coating.
Is tumbled limestone different from honed or polished stone?
Yes. The tumbled finish is more open and textured than a honed or polished face, so it soaks up more, blooms paler and shows marks sooner, and it is also exactly the kind of open surface our coating grips into best.
